Camera footage of a police officer in St. Louis County, Missouri, approaching a car and saying "Stop or I'll shoot." | St. Louis County Police Department

St. Louis County, Missouri, Police Chief Juan Cox says he does not know why police officers shot at a car full of teenagers. The officers were breaking up a large group shooting fireworks over the July 4 weekend. Cox acknowledged that police dashcam and body camera video showed the teens got conflicting orders: One officer fired a less-lethal shotgun round and ordered them to get in a car and drive away, even smashing their back window while telling them to go faster. But as they started to drive away, another officer ran up and ordered them to stop before immediately firing 11 rounds through the windshield. Two passengers were struck by gunfire, while another was hit by broken glass; no injuries were fatal. Cox declined to say if the officers’ actions met department standards, citing an ongoing investigation. The officers involved are currently on administrative duty.
