A handgun against the backdrop of raffle tickets | Kenishirotie/Andrei Victor Calangiu/Dreamstime

Quitman, Georgia, Police Chief Lawrence McGee was arrested after a grand jury indicted him on charges of felony theft and violation of his oath of office. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Quitman Police Department received a donated handgun in January 2026 that was supposed to be used as a raffle prize at a regional traffic enforcement meeting. Investigators claim McGee kept the gun for himself instead of including it in the raffle. The Brooks County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to investigate the theft in February.
