Although I detested the politics and confrontational style of Ann Widdecombe, in 1994, while she was minister of state for employment, I agreed to brief her about my research on age discrimination against older workers. She revealed both a keen interest in the findings and considerable outrage. Then she acted swiftly to right one of the wrongs revealed by the research by abolishing the upper age limit on the government’s own training scheme for unemployed people.
